Do you like your God of War clones a little more Nordic? Well, then you will love Beowulf: The Game. Based on the 2007 interpretation of the Old English Epic Poem, Beowulf has you playing as the hero of Goats, Beowulf. The man that they sing about in great halls, while drinking mead. The man whose great feats are without equal, but the man whose game leaves much to be desired. The story follows loosely the plot of the movie, which itself followed the poem loosely. Which means, you cannot use this game as a study tool for your AP English class? Grindelias not a sympathetic character, Grenfell’s Mother did not seduce Beowulf, and the Dragon was not Beowulf’s child.
Ok, got that off my chest. But you will go through these epic battles, from battling Grande to the years of Beowulf’s reign as king of Denmark. The game play is very much is the same style of most modern action games, and that is today it is just like God of War. Beowulf will move through environments and fight against the men and monsters who stand in his way. You can do light and heavy attacks, and also roll out of the way.
One of the more interesting things about the combat is Beowulf’s only default weapon is his fists. You will find swords, spears, and axes around the levels, that will eventually wear down and need replaced. But the game tries to distinguish itself from many other action games by making you nota one man instrument of death. Beowulf has his Thanes, his group of men who accompany him.
They will help you with combat, fighting against the monsters of the land, and also manipulating the landscape, moving objects for you and singing songs for you. You can command them and also encourage them by a mini-game where you match button presses to instill confidence in them. And Beowulf also has his own powers. He can go into a rage that costs health but makes him even more powerful.
The biggest problem with the game is its reliance on staples of the genre. Almost everything will require a QuickTime event, which will drive you nuts because the input window haste is the smallest I’ve ever seen. Also the game doesn’t look too great and the action is very limited, with mindless button presses to clear out a horde of barbarians. Beowulf is one of the greatest heroes in English literature, but unfortunately his game is one of the more forgettable.
